How to make a Killer Speed Website [Updated 2018]

Alerted by a reader Adriana Abbate, I’ve updated link to the tool for GZIP as the one I’ve linked to in 2015 is no longer working.

Before we begin, test your page using Google’s test or GTmatrix for your site.

Once you find out your page’s loading time, what can you do to shorten it? The following steps can help any site, no matter how fast, trim a few seconds off of its loading time:

1. Use GZIP compression – By using GZIP on your site you can reduce your website’s file size by as much as 70% without degrading the quality of the images, video or the site at all (the picture is my site before and after GZIP). To see if your site is already GZIPPED, click here to run a simple test.


2. Optimise your Javascript and Stylesheets – Have your scripts and CSS load in by themselves instead of with each and every web pages. This way, the browser only has to load them one time, rather than every time your visitors go to a different page of your site. However there are reasons sometimes that Javascript needs to load near the top of the page  such as to display load up an image carousel. Warning! Work with your site designer if you’re not able to change the code of the site by yourself.

3. Optimize Your Images – If you are using image tools such as Photoshop, use it’s “Save for Web” option to drastically reduce image size. If not, you can use a free tool called from Yahoo to do the trick. Don’t rely on your HTML code to re-size images as the browser will still load the full image, before checking and re-sizing to the width and height you specified in the code.

5. Cache everything – Cache the latest version of your pages on your visitors browser and displaying it to your users will reduce the loading time for subsequent visits as their browser do not need to generate that page every single time. Again, if you’re not familiar with codes, work with your website designer to do so.

6. Using Content Delivery Network (CDN) – If your site is extremely popular and despite your best efforts, your page is still quite sizable, consider a CDN such as CDN77, MAXCDN or Amazon Cloudfront. CDN works by serving pages depending on where the user is located. Typically faster access to a server near their geographical area means data is transferred faster. You can find more CDN from here.
